A tooth is not an isolated structure.
Gums and supporting tissues are part of overall oral health. Periodontology focuses on these structures. The schematic cross-section shows their relationship without assigning a stage of disease.
Which changes should you discuss?
Bleeding, redness, swelling or other gum changes are reasons to seek dental assessment. Describing a symptom is not enough to choose a treatment. Discuss what you have noticed during the examination.
Assessment before a plan.
The examination establishes the condition and the next steps needed. Not every patient requires the same approach. Ask about the purpose of the proposed care and how progress will be reviewed.
Maintenance care.
Daily hygiene and review visits are discussed as part of the plan. Ask for instructions suited to your circumstances. General advice on a website does not replace recommendations following an examination.
Links with other areas of care.
The condition of the gums may form part of a discussion about restorations, implants or orthodontic care. Clarify the sequence of the different steps with your team.
